Dubai, UAE - The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially opened an 800-meter tunnel with a capacity of four lanes in each direction as part of the Umm Suqeim Street development project. This project extends from the intersection with Al Khail Road to the intersection with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and aims to enhance the road infrastructure in Dubai to accommodate ongoing urban development and population growth.
Enhancing Traffic Flow and Quality of Life
The initiative is designed to improve traffic flow and support the emirate’s comprehensive development, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for both residents and visitors. The project complements ongoing upgrades to Umm Suqeim Street from its intersection with Al Khail Road to Emirates Road, facilitating uninterrupted traffic flow from Jumeirah to Al Qudra Road over a total distance of 20 kilometers.
Key Features of the Project
His Excellency Matar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, highlighted the significance of the project, stating, “The upgrade of Umm Suqeim Street, from its intersection with Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road, forms part of a master plan to develop the Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra corridor. This strategic route serves key residential and development zones with a combined population exceeding two million.”
The project includes the upgrade of six key intersections along Umm Suqeim Street, specifically those with Jumeirah Street, Al Wasl Street, Sheikh Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, Al Asayel Street, and Al Khail Road. The scope encompasses the construction of four bridges and three tunnels, totaling 4,100 meters in length.
Innovative Technologies Used
Al Tayer noted that the RTA utilized the latest smart technologies in the Umm Suqeim Street development project. Drones were employed to analyze data on the progress of the work, leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance operational efficiency and decision-making. This technology has significantly improved site monitoring and reduced the time required for field surveys by 60%.
Previous Developments
The RTA previously completed the first phase of the Umm Suqeim Street development in 2013, which included the construction of two bridges with three lanes in each direction and traffic signal installations at key intersections. In 2020, the RTA opened a major bridge as part of the Dubai Hills Mall project, further enhancing connectivity in the area.
Conclusion
The opening of the new tunnel and the ongoing development of Umm Suqeim Street reflect Dubai's commitment to improving its road infrastructure and accommodating the needs of its growing population. With these enhancements, the RTA aims to ensure smoother traffic flow and a better quality of life for all residents and visitors.
